Coach Cole Walter brings a calm crease presence, a serious playing resume, and one of the best laughs in the room. A Rochester, Minnesota native, Cole is in his 19th season playing goalie and has competed at Illinois State University and Bradley University. He also built a record-setting NA3HL run with the Peoria Mustangs, where he became the program's wins leader.
At Defiance, Coach Walter helps goalies chase their full potential on and off the ice by keeping the details sharp, the standards high, and the room loose enough for players to enjoy the work. Watch for him in upcoming Defiance coaching videos.
Coach Brendan Donovan started playing hockey at age 7 and made the switch to goalie at 8, which means he learned early that the crease is where the interesting stuff happens. He most recently played four seasons of collegiate hockey at Illinois State University, where he graduated in 2025.
Brendan is excited to begin his coaching career with Defiance and give back to the hockey community that helped raise him. His coaching approach is steady, detailed, and player-first: help goalies understand the position, build confidence, and enjoy the process of getting better.
Defiance breaks goalie skills into smaller parts, trains the details, then pieces them together into the bigger picture of playing goalie and reading the game. The work stays practical: crease movement, save selection, rebound control, puck tracking, recovery, and game IQ.
